J. Perry & Sons frames and finishes curved drywall for homes, condos and commercial spaces in Broward and Palm Beach counties: radius walls around a stair or foyer, arched doorways and niches, barrel-vault hallways, curved soffits over a kitchen island or reception desk, and the groin and dome ceilings that show up in Mediterranean-style houses from Boca Raton to Wellington. This is a specialty within our stucco and drywall finishing work. A curve is only as good as its framing and its finish, so the same crew lays out the radius, bends the board and skims it to Level 5. We also do the reverse: removing dated arches and squaring them.

Curved Drywall Cost in South Florida: $45–$90 per linear ft of wall

ScopeTypical sizeInstalled range
Curved wall, framed and finished, 8–10 ft tallper linear ft of curve$45–$90 per lf
Arched doorway or cased opening in drywall, new or converted from square3–4 ft wide$600–$1,400 each
Arched niche with curved back, finished2x4 ft$700–$1,500 each
Barrel-vault ceiling over a hallway4 ft wide x 12–20 ft long$3,500–$8,000
Curved soffit or bulkhead over island or deskper linear ft$60–$120 per lf
Radius or dome ceiling in a foyer or dining room10–14 ft diameter$6,000–$15,000
Square off an existing drywall arch (interior only)per opening$450–$900 each

Pricing covers layout, metal or wood framing, flexible or double-layer 1/4-inch board, bead, tape, a Level 5 skim and sanding. Tighter radii cost more because the board has to be wetted, scored or doubled, and soffit and ceiling work adds lift and overhead time. Lighting, electrical and paint are separate.

Curves we build and how each is framed

Radius walls. Laid out from a center point on the floor, framed with flexible track kerfed on 2-inch centers for the curve, studs at 8 inches on center or closer. Board is 1/4-inch flexible gypsum in two layers for radii under 8 feet, or 1/2-inch board scored and wetted for gentle curves.

Arched openings. Framed with a plywood or pre-formed arch kit set in the opening, blocked to the header, and faced with flexible board or flexible arch bead. The soffit of the arch gets a strip of 1/4-inch board bent to the curve. Elliptical and segmental arches are laid out full scale on the floor first. See the curved wall cost guide.

Barrel vaults. Radius ribs cut from plywood or formed from bent track, spaced 12–16 inches, with 1/4-inch flexible board bent across them in two layers. The transition to flat ceiling is run with flexible bead.

Dome and groin ceilings. Built on a frame of radial ribs; board is cut in gores or replaced with a fiberglass-reinforced plaster form where the double curve is too tight for gypsum. Finished in setting compound and skimmed.

Curved soffits and bulkheads. The island and reception-desk soffit: a curved frame hung from the ceiling joists or deck, boarded on the face and bottom, with a light cove or LED channel built in if wanted.

Squaring an arch. The arch frame comes out, the opening is reframed square, boarded and finished. Most 1990s houses here have three to six of them.

How we build a curved wall or ceiling

  1. Layout. The radius is drawn full scale on the floor or on a template from a center point. For ceilings, ribs are cut to the template before anything goes up.
  2. Framing. Kerfed flexible track top and bottom, studs on 6–8 inch centers for tight radii. Ribs for vaults and domes are set to a laser line.
  3. Board. Flexible 1/4-inch gypsum is applied in two layers, joints staggered, screwed on 6-inch centers. For gentle curves, 1/2-inch board is scored on the back or wetted and set over a few hours.
  4. Bead. Flexible vinyl or paper-faced flex bead on every curved edge and arch soffit so the line stays true.
  5. Tape and finish. Setting compound in the first coat on all joints to control shrinkage over the layered board, then two more coats.
  6. Level 5 skim. Every curve is skimmed in full. Curves catch light from every angle and show board joints that a flat wall hides.
  7. Sand under raking light. A work light set low along the curve finds every flat spot and ridge before the painter arrives.

Curved drywall in South Florida: block walls, humidity and condos

Furring and block. Curved walls inside a CBS house are usually freestanding partitions, which is simple. A curve against a block wall needs a furred cavity and the depth to fit it.

Humidity. Wetted board and setting compound both dry slowly in summer. We allow extra time between layers so the second layer is not screwed to a damp first layer that will shrink.

Condos. Curved soffits and bulkheads in condos often hide sprinkler mains and HVAC, and the association wants to see the layout and the permit. We coordinate both and work within building hours.

Mediterranean houses. Boca Raton, Parkland and Wellington have a generation of homes with arches, niches and groin vaults built by production crews. Repairs, matching an existing arch, and squaring them off are a regular call.

Permits. Non-structural interior partitions and ceilings usually fall under a renovation permit; stand-alone cosmetic work generally needs none. We advise per municipality.

Curved walls, arches and radius ceilings — FAQ

How much does a curved drywall wall cost? $45–$90 per linear foot of curve for an 8–10 foot wall, framed, boarded in two layers and skimmed to Level 5. Tight radii and ceilings sit at the top of the range.

Can you make a square doorway into an arch? Yes. An arch kit or plywood form goes into the existing opening, the soffit is boarded with flexible gypsum and finished, at $600–$1,400 per opening.

Can you remove the arches in my house? Yes. Interior drywall arches are squared at $450–$900 each. Arched exterior windows are a different scope and are covered under opening reshaping.

Why does the curve need Level 5? A curve picks up light from every direction, so every board joint and screw dimple shows. A full skim gives one continuous surface.
