Fireplace refacing in Florida costs $6,000–$11,000 for most projects: the existing firebox stays, and the brick, tile or drywall around it gets a new face in stacked stone, large-format tile or porcelain slab. A surround-only reface starts around $2,500; a floor-to-ceiling feature wall with a mantel and a built-in TV niche runs $7,750–$11,000 and more in slab. This guide from J. Perry & Sons fireplace installation and refacing gives the installed ranges we quote in Broward and Palm Beach.

Fireplace refacing cost by finish and size

FinishSurround only (30–50 sq ft)Floor to ceiling, 8–9 ft wall (70–100 sq ft)
Stacked stone or ledger panel veneer$3,500–$5,250$6,000–$8,500
Full-bed natural stone veneer (fieldstone, limestone)$4,250–$6,250$7,500–$11,000
Large-format porcelain tile (24x48)$3,250–$4,500$5,250–$7,500
Porcelain slab (1 or 2 bookmatched panels)$4,750–$7,000$8,500–$13,000
Marble or quartzite slab$5,750–$8,500$11,000–$16,000

Ranges include demo or prep of the existing face, cement board or lath where needed, the finish material installed, and a stone or wood hearth. Mantels ($950–$1,750), floating TV niches, electrical for a TV and relocating the firebox are extra. On tile and slab the material is priced in at mid-range; exotic slabs change the number.

  1. Assess the existing face. Brick and block can be veneered over directly after cleaning. Tile is usually removed. Drywall is replaced with cement board around the firebox.
  2. Prep. Scratch coat over brick, or cement board and lath on framing, so the new material has a solid bond. Any gap between the firebox and the finish gets a non-combustible closure.
  3. Set the stone or tile. Stone veneer is set in a polymer-modified mortar, panel by panel, with corners first. Large-format porcelain is set with a large-tile mortar and leveling clips. Slab is set in full-coverage mortar, usually one or two pieces, with a seam planned at the firebox or mantel line.
  4. Hearth. A raised or flush hearth in matching stone, slab or a solid limestone piece.
  5. Mantel and finish. Wood beam, floating stone shelf or no mantel. Grout, sealer, caulk at the firebox.

Clearances to combustibles around the firebox are set by the fireplace manufacturer or by code for masonry. We keep the wood mantel and any TV outside those clearances.

Stone veneer, tile or slab: how to choose

Stacked stone veneer is the most-requested fireplace face in South Florida. It hides an uneven brick face, it is forgiving on a wall that is not perfectly plumb, and it works with both a traditional and a modern room. Ledger panels go up fast; loose-stone veneer takes longer and looks more natural. See stone veneer over a brick fireplace.

Large-format porcelain tile gives a clean, modern wall with a few grout lines. It is the budget route to a slab look and comes in marble, concrete and wood patterns.

Porcelain slab is one or two 5x10 panels with no grout lines at all, bookmatched if you want a marble vein running up the wall. It is heat-safe, does not stain, and it is the finish most of our modern renovation clients choose. Read porcelain slab walls cost.

Natural stone slab (marble, quartzite) is the top of the range: real stone, real vein, and a weight that needs a solid wall behind it.

Gas, electric and wood fireplaces in Florida

Most fireplaces we reface in Broward and Palm Beach are gas or electric inserts. An electric fireplace has no clearance issue beyond the manufacturer's spec, so a TV and a wood mantel can sit close above it. A gas or wood-burning firebox has clearances to combustibles that set where the mantel and TV go; stone and porcelain are non-combustible, so the finish can run right to the firebox opening. If you are adding a fireplace rather than refacing one, see fireplace installation and build.

South Florida conditions that affect the job

Humidity. Stone veneer indoors is not sealed unless the client wants a wet look. Grout and mortar cure slower in summer; we allow an extra day.

Permits. Refacing a fireplace with a non-structural finish does not typically require a permit in Broward or Palm Beach. Adding or relocating a gas line, adding a new firebox or changing the venting does, and we pull it.

HOA and condos. Interior fireplace refacing rarely needs HOA approval. In a condo, slab and stone deliveries go through the association's move-in process and the contractor's insurance goes on file.

Weight. A floor-to-ceiling natural stone slab wall can weigh 600–900 lbs. The wall framing is checked and blocked before it goes up.

Timeline for fireplace refacing

  • Stacked stone surround: 2–3 days
  • Floor-to-ceiling stone veneer with hearth and mantel: 4–6 days
  • Large-format tile wall: 3–4 days
  • Porcelain or natural stone slab wall: 1 day to template, 1–2 weeks fabrication, 1–2 days to install

The room is dusty for the demo day only; after that the work is contained to the wall.

How to keep the fireplace refacing price in range

  1. Keep the existing firebox and location. Moving a gas line or vent doubles the project.
  2. Choose a ledger panel over loose-stone veneer if the budget is tight; the look is close and the labor is half.
  3. Stop the stone at the mantel and paint above if the wall is over 9 feet.
  4. On slab, plan one seam at the mantel line instead of paying for a single oversized panel.
  5. Run the TV electrical while the wall is open, even if the TV comes later.

Fireplace refacing cost — FAQ

How much does it cost to reface a fireplace? $3,500–$5,250 for a stacked stone or tile surround, $7,000–$11,000 for a floor-to-ceiling stone wall, and $10,000–$16,000 for a porcelain or natural stone slab wall, installed.

Can you put stone veneer over a brick fireplace? Yes. Clean brick is one of the best substrates for stone veneer. It is scratch-coated and the stone is set directly on it, with no demolition.

What is the cheapest way to reface a fireplace? Large-format porcelain tile over the existing surround, or a ledger-panel stacked stone. Both start around $2,500 installed.

Do I need a permit to reface a fireplace in Florida? Not for a finish-only reface in Broward or Palm Beach. Gas line, venting or a new firebox requires a permit, which we pull.

How do I get an exact price? Call (561) 556-7509 or email photos and rough dimensions to jperrysonsgc@gmail.com. A written estimate is typically ready within 24–48 hours after a site review and scope confirmation.
