J. Perry & Sons designs and installs custom closets, pantries, laundry rooms and garage storage for homeowners in Broward and Palm Beach counties. Most closet jobs come to us as part of a renovation: a master bathroom we tiled with a walk-in closet next to it, or a new floor that makes the old wire shelving look worse. We also do stand-alone closets, from a single reach-in to a full dressing room with an island. See all renovation services or read the custom closet cost guide first.

Custom Closet Cost in South Florida: $3,750–$29,000 installed

Walk-in with drawers, island, LED lighting, glass doors10x12 ft and up$18,000–$29,000
Pantry with pull-outs, adjustable shelves, lighting4–6 ft wide$4,750–$8,000
Garage storage cabinets, wall-hung with workbench12–20 linear ft$6,250–$10,000

Pricing includes design, materials, delivery, installation, and removal of the old wire or wood shelving. Floors, baseboard and painting in the closet are quoted with it when the closet is part of a bigger job. Wood-grain and textured melamine add 15–25% over white; real wood veneer roughly doubles the cabinet cost.

Closet materials and options

Melamine panels (standard). 3/4-inch thermally fused laminate over a particleboard or MDF core, in white, grays and wood grains. Edges are banded on all exposed sides. This is the right material for Florida because it does not absorb humidity the way raw wood does.

Wood veneer and painted MDF. Furniture-grade look for dressing rooms and primary suites. Painted MDF doors and drawer fronts in a lacquer finish match kitchen cabinetry when the closet opens onto the bedroom.

Drawers and hardware. Full-extension soft-close slides, dovetail or metal drawer boxes, velvet-lined jewelry trays, pull-down rods for high hanging, valet rods, tie and belt racks. Hardware is where the price moves most on a walk-in.

Lighting. LED strip under shelves and inside hanging sections on a motion sensor or door switch. Hard-wired lighting needs an electrical permit; plug-in low-voltage systems do not.

Doors and islands. Glass-front display doors, sliding mirror doors, and center islands with drawers on both sides and a stone or quartz top from our stone slab installation team.

How we install a custom closet

  1. Measure and design. We measure the space, count what you hang, fold and store, and draw a layout with elevations. You see the design before anything is ordered.
  2. Material and finish selection. Panel color, door style, hardware and lighting are picked from samples in your home, in your light.
  3. Demo of the old closet. Wire shelving, cleats and old rods come out. Holes are patched and sanded. If the closet floor is getting tile or LVP, it goes in now, before the cabinets.
  4. Paint. Closet walls and ceiling are painted before install so there is no cutting-in around the cabinetry later.
  5. Floor and wall check. Florida slabs are rarely level and closet walls are rarely plumb. We shim and scribe so every tower is plumb and every shelf line is level across the room.
  6. Install towers and panels. Cabinets are anchored to studs or to the CBS block with the right fastener. Nothing hangs on drywall alone.
  7. Rods, shelves, drawers, doors. Adjustable shelves set to your clothing heights, rods at single or double hang, drawers aligned, doors hung.
  8. Lighting and trim. LED strips wired or plugged, crown or base trim where specified, and a final walk-through.

Closets in South Florida: humidity, storms and condo rules

Humidity. Closets are the stillest air in the house, which is why clothes smell musty and leather spots mold in Florida. We leave air gaps behind towers, avoid sealing a closet off from the room's return air, and recommend a louvered or undercut door on closets without a supply vent. Melamine and painted MDF hold up; raw or oiled wood does not.

Slabs and settling. Older CBS homes in Broward and Palm Beach have slabs that are off by half an inch or more across a closet. We level the cabinet run and finish with a toe kick or scribe molding so the gap disappears.

Hurricane season. A walk-in closet without windows is often the home's safe room. We can build in a fire-rated storage drawer or cabinet for documents and keep one section free of shelving for that purpose if you ask.

Condo and HOA rules. Interior cabinetry does not need association approval in most buildings, but any electrical for lighting or an outlet in the closet does need a permit and, in many condos, a building work authorization and insurance certificate from us. We handle that paperwork.

Permits. Cabinetry alone does not require a permit in Broward or Palm Beach. Hard-wired lighting or new outlets do, and if we move a wall to enlarge a closet, that is a building permit we pull.

  • Drawn layout with elevations and dimensions for each wall
  • Panel material, thickness, color and edge banding
  • Count of hanging sections (single, double, long), shelves, drawers, shoe shelves and accessories
  • Hardware brand and type: slides, hinges, rods, pulls
  • Doors: style, count, glass or solid
  • Lighting: type, locations, wired or plug-in, and the electrical permit if required
  • Demo and disposal of the existing shelving, patching and paint
  • Flooring and baseboard inside the closet if part of the scope
  • Island top material if an island is included
  • Installation schedule and workmanship warranty terms

Closet organizer systems built around what you own

Opening the closet to piles on the floor and one sagging rod? Closet organizer systems give everything you own a set place. We measure the space and ask what goes in it: long dresses or suits, shoes, what needs to fold. Think of us as the closet designer and the installer in one visit.

Custom closet systems with drawers. Drawer banks under hanging sections hold folded clothes and accessories. Soft-close slides, jewelry trays and pull-out hampers go where you want them.

Personalized closets, walk-in or reach-in. A walk-in has room for hanging on three walls, a shoe wall and sometimes an island, and a shared one can be split into two sides with different rod heights. Reach-in closet systems work best with double hanging and a drawer stack in the middle. Custom closet design starts from that shape.

Pantry closet systems. Adjustable shelves, pull-out baskets and a spot for small appliances turn a deep pantry closet into storage you can see. We also build garage storage, including garage cabinets, the same way.

Custom closet cost and closet installation cost. The price follows the size of the space, the number of drawers, doors and accessories, and the finish. The cost table on this page shows our ranges by closet type. Store-bought kits leave gaps; custom closet systems are cut to your walls, run to the ceiling and are fastened into the studs.

Custom closets — FAQ

How much does a custom closet cost in South Florida? A reach-in runs $3,000–$5,250 installed. A walk-in runs $8,500–$13,000 in white melamine and $18,000–$29,000 with drawers, an island, lighting and glass doors.

Melamine or wood for a Florida closet? Melamine for most homes. It does not swell in humidity, cleans easily and comes in wood grains that read well. Real wood veneer or painted MDF is for dressing rooms where the closet is visible from the bedroom.

How long does a closet install take? One to two days on site for a reach-in or standard walk-in, two to four days for a large walk-in with an island and lighting. Lead time for materials is usually two to four weeks after the design is approved.

Can you add lighting to my closet? Yes. Plug-in LED systems need no permit. Hard-wired lighting or a new outlet needs an electrical permit, which we pull, and in a condo a work authorization from the building.

Do you do the floor and paint in the closet too? Yes. The floor and paint go in before the closet system. Doing them in the same job means no cutting-in around towers and no flooring seam at the closet door.

How do I get an exact price? Call (561) 556-7509 or send us your project through our project form with photos and rough dimensions. A written estimate is typically ready within 24–48 hours after a site review and scope confirmation.

Do you design the closet, or only install it? Both. We measure the space, go over what you need to store, lay out the sections, drawers and shelves, and then install the system with our own crew.
