J. Perry & Sons installs artificial turf and backyard putting greens in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade: whole backyards, side yards that never grew grass, dog runs, strips between pavers, and the lawn around the pool. Turf usually goes in alongside hardscape we are already building, which is why it sits with our paver installation service: one crew sets the pavers, the edges and the base for the turf so the two meet cleanly. Artificial turf installation runs $12–$20 per sq ft, and a putting green $22–$38 per sq ft.
Artificial turf cost per square foot in South Florida
| Scope | Unit | Installed range |
|---|---|---|
| Backyard or front lawn turf, sod removal, base, infill | per sq ft | $12–$16 |
| Premium or pet turf with flow-through backing and antimicrobial infill | per sq ft | $15–$20 |
| Turf around a pool, between pavers or in narrow strips with heavy cutting | per sq ft | $16–$20 |
| Backyard putting green, single tier, 2 to 4 cups | per sq ft | $22–$30 |
| Putting green with contours, fringe, multiple cups or chipping area | per sq ft | $30–$38 |
Ranges cover sod and soil removal, haul-away, a compacted crushed-stone base, weed barrier, turf, seaming, nailing or edge anchoring, and infill. Small areas, tight access where material goes in by wheelbarrow, curved borders and fixing low spots with extra base move a job up the range. New paver borders, sprinkler capping or rerouting, and drainage beyond the base are separate lines.
Turf options
Landscape turf. Blades in two or three shades of green with a thatch layer, typically 1½ in to 2 in pile. Looks like a mowed lawn and stands back up after foot traffic.
Pet turf. Shorter, denser pile with a fully perforated or flow-through backing so urine drains straight down, plus an antimicrobial or odor-control infill. The base under it is built to drain fast, and we can add a rinse point nearby.
Putting green turf. Short, dense nylon or polypropylene made to roll true. Speed depends on the turf, the infill sand and how firm the base is compacted. Cups, flags and a fringe collar finish it.
Cool-touch and heat-reducing turf. Florida turf gets hot in direct afternoon sun. Lighter blade colors, heat-reflective fibers and some infills run cooler, and a quick rinse helps on the hottest days.

Base prep and drainage: what makes turf last
The turf you see is the easy part. A bad base is why turf ripples, puddles and smells. Our process:
- Remove sod and soil to about 3 in to 4 in deep, more where roots or organic soil are heavy.
- Grade for drainage. Slope away from the house and toward a swale, drain or the existing yard pattern. Sprinkler heads in the turf area are capped or converted.
- Weed barrier over native soil.
- Base. Crushed stone or a graded aggregate placed and compacted in lifts with a plate compactor, then a finer top layer screeded smooth. Putting greens get extra compaction and shaping for breaks and contours.
- Turf layout. Rolls laid with the grain running the same way, seams cut and joined with seam tape and adhesive.
- Edges. Nailed and anchored at borders, tucked against pavers or set behind a bender board or concrete curb.
- Infill and brush. Sand or specialty infill brushed in to stand the blades up and weigh the turf down.
In South Florida summer storms can drop inches of rain in an hour. Turf itself drains through the backing, but the water has to go somewhere below, so the base and grading matter more here than in drier states. Where a yard sits low or the water table is high, we add a French drain or connect to existing yard drainage.
Pool surrounds, pets and backyards
Around the pool. Turf between the pool deck and the fence cuts mowing and keeps grass clippings out of the water. We hold the turf edge back from the coping and set it against a paver border so it does not wick pool water. See pool deck pavers for the hardscape side.
Dog runs. Pet turf on a free-draining base, with a hose bib within reach. Regular rinsing and an enzyme cleaner keep odor down.
Shade and side yards. The places grass gives up on, under oaks and along narrow side yards, are where turf earns its cost fastest.
Play areas. A shock pad under the turf softens falls under swing sets.
HOA rules and permits
Many HOAs in Broward and Palm Beach now allow artificial turf in backyards, and some limit or ban it in front yards, or require a specific product or color. Get the approval before we order material; we provide the product spec sheet and a layout for the application. Turf on its own rarely needs a building permit, but drainage changes, new hardscape or work near a seawall may. Check with the building department for your address. Artificial turf and putting greens — FAQ
How much does artificial turf cost per square foot installed? $12–$20 per sq ft, including sod removal, a compacted stone base, the turf and infill. Pet turf and pool-area work with heavy cutting sit toward the top.
How much does a backyard putting green cost? $22–$38 per sq ft. A simple single-tier green sits at the low end; contours, multiple cups and a chipping fringe push it to the top.
Is artificial turf good for dogs? Yes, with pet turf on a flow-through backing, a free-draining base and regular rinsing. Odor problems almost always trace back to a base that holds water.
Does turf get hot in Florida? It runs warmer than grass in direct afternoon sun. Heat-reducing fibers, lighter colors and a quick rinse help, and shaded yards stay comfortable.
Will my HOA allow artificial turf? Many allow it in backyards and set rules for front yards. We supply the product spec and layout for your application before ordering.
