Resurfacing a pool deck with pavers costs $14–$34 per square foot installed in Broward and Palm Beach counties, so an 800 sq ft deck lands between $11,200 and $27,200 depending on whether you overlay the existing slab or replace it and which stone you pick. J. Perry & Sons is a paver installation contractor that handles the whole deck: demo or overlay prep, coping, base, drainage, pavers and sealing. This page covers overlay versus replacement, the four materials that work around a Florida pool, slip and heat, and the permit.

Ranges include demo (or slab prep for an overlay), compacted limerock base, bedding, pavers, edge restraint and polymeric sand, with the stone supplied by the owner unless we quote supply. Coping, deck drains, pool equipment pads and sealing are separate lines. Pricing by option is covered in detail in the pool deck resurfacing cost guide.

Overlay vs replace, and the four materials that work

Overlay. If the existing concrete deck is sound, with no heaving, no wide cracks and no sections that rock, we set ¾ in pavers over it on a thin mortar or sand bed. It saves the demo cost and a week of noise. It raises the deck 1–1½ in, so coping, thresholds and gate clearances are checked, and any existing drainage problem stays.

Full replacement. Cracked, settled or spalling decks come out. We rebuild the base, fix the slope, add deck drains where needed and reset the coping. It is the only way to fix a deck that already moves.

Travertine. The default here: cool underfoot, grips when tumbled, $18–$30 per sq ft. Needs a penetrating sealer every 1–2 years around a pool.

Marble. Lighter, formal, denser than travertine, $22–$34. Prefer honed-matte over polished for slip. Salt systems etch it faster, so sealing is not optional.

Shellstone. Warm, soft limestone full of fossil shell, $22–$34. Very cool to walk on and naturally textured, but the softest of the four and the one most dependent on sealing.

Porcelain pavers (2 cm). Zero absorption, no sealing, no fading, rated slip-resistant in the R11 range. The downside is heat: darker colors get hotter than stone, so pick a light tone for an open deck. $22–$34.

How we resurface a pool deck with pavers

  1. Assessment. We check the slab for movement, map the cracks, confirm drainage and decide overlay or replace. The pool barrier (fence, gates, door alarms) is checked against current code because a rebuilt deck brings it into play.
  2. Protection. The pool is covered, equipment is protected, and irrigation is capped.
  3. Demo or prep. Full replacement: the old deck is broken out and hauled, including any Kool Deck or spray texture. Overlay: the slab is cleaned, loose coating removed and cracks filled.
  4. Base and slope. Replacement decks get geotextile fabric and 4–6 in of compacted limerock, screeded to fall ⅛ in per foot away from the pool, with deck drains tied to a yard outlet.
  5. Coping. Bullnose or square-edge coping is set on mortar at the beam first, level around the whole pool, with the tile line protected.
  6. Setting the field. Pavers run from the coping outward in the chosen pattern, border at the house and planting beds, all cuts wet on a diamond saw.
  7. Edge restraint and joints. Edging at every open edge, polymeric sand swept in and compacted, activated and washed.
  8. Equipment pads and steps. Pump pads, step treads and spa surrounds are finished in the same material.
  9. Sealing. Stone is sealed after 30–60 days of cure in a separate visit. Porcelain is not sealed.

Permits and compliance handled. J. Perry & Sons pulls the permit, schedules the inspections, and builds to the city and county codes that apply — Broward and Palm Beach municipal building departments, HVHZ requirements where they apply, and HOA/condo association rules. Pool decks in South Florida: slip, heat, salt and barrier rules

Slip. A wet pool deck needs texture. Tumbled travertine, honed (not polished) marble, shellstone and R11 porcelain all pass; polished stone and smooth concrete pavers do not. Joint sand also helps by breaking up the surface.

Heat. Surface temperature tracks color more than material. Ivory travertine and light porcelain stay comfortable barefoot in August; charcoal porcelain and dark concrete pavers do not. If you want a dark modern look, keep it to the covered patio and run a light paver on the open deck.

Salt and chemistry. Saltwater pools splash a brine that dries on the stone every day. Travertine and porcelain tolerate it; marble and shellstone need sealing on a tighter schedule. Splash zones near the steps and spa spillway take the most wear.

Rain and drainage. Summer storms overwhelm a deck that slopes toward the pool or has no drain. We set the fall away from the water and add channel or spot drains to a yard outlet.

Permits and the pool barrier. Most full pool deck replacements need a permit in Broward and Palm Beach cities, typically $150–$600 and 2–4 weeks, and an overlay often does when it changes deck height at doors and gates. Inspectors check the pool barrier (fence height, self-closing gates, latch heights, door alarms) when a deck is rebuilt; we handle that review up front. Details in the pool deck permit guide. HOA approval is common in Weston, Parkland, Wellington and Boca communities.

Pool deck pavers — FAQ

How much does it cost to resurface a pool deck with pavers? $14–$22 per sq ft as an overlay on a sound slab, $18–$30 for travertine with a new base, and $22–$34 for marble, shellstone or porcelain. An 800 sq ft deck runs $11,200–$27,200 before coping and sealing.

Can pavers go over my existing concrete pool deck? Yes, if the slab is sound: no heaving, no rocking sections, no wide cracks. The overlay raises the deck about 1–1½ in, so coping, thresholds and gate clearances are checked first. Decks that already move need full replacement.

Which pool deck paver stays coolest? Light travertine and shellstone, then light porcelain. Color matters more than material: a charcoal porcelain or dark concrete paver gets hot in direct sun regardless.

Are porcelain pavers slippery around a pool? Outdoor-rated 2 cm porcelain pavers carry an R11 or similar slip rating and perform well wet. Avoid indoor-rated porcelain and any polished finish.

Do I need a permit to redo my pool deck? Usually yes for a full replacement in Broward and Palm Beach cities, and often for an overlay that changes deck height. Inspectors also check the pool barrier when a deck is rebuilt. We pull the permit and handle the barrier review.
