A driveway extension adds a parking pad, widens a single-car drive to fit two, or runs a strip to the side gate for a boat or trailer. J. Perry & Sons builds them in pavers or concrete across Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade, and we also lay pavers over existing concrete when the slab is sound, or tear out and replace the whole drive. It is one part of our paver installation work, and paving and driveways are most of what that crew does. A driveway extension in pavers typically runs $19–$39 per sq ft, and in concrete $12–$20 per sq ft.
Driveway extension cost in South Florida
| Scope | Unit | Installed range |
|---|---|---|
| Driveway extension in concrete pavers, base and edge restraint | per sq ft | $19–$28 |
| Driveway extension in travertine, brick or cobblestone-style pavers | per sq ft | $24–$39 |
| Driveway extension in concrete, 4 in with wire or fiber, broom finish | per sq ft | $12–$20 |
| Pavers over existing concrete driveway, bonded overlay | per sq ft | $17–$32, leveling extra |
| Concrete driveway replacement: tear-out, base, pour | per sq ft | $12–$20 |
| Full paver driveway replacement, tear-out included | per sq ft | $19–$39 |
| Concrete removal where the slab goes and pavers come in | per sq ft | $8–$16 |
Small extensions carry a higher per-foot price because the saw cut, layout and mobilization are the same for 80 sq ft as for 400. Ranges include sod and soil removal, compacted limerock base, the paver or concrete, and haul-away. Leveling a wavy slab before an overlay, a new drain, apron work in the city right-of-way and permit fees are separate lines. Paver sealing is priced on our paver repair and sealing page.
Pavers over concrete: when the overlay works
Laying pavers on an existing concrete driveway saves the tear-out and the base, and it raises the surface only about 1¼ in to 2¾ in depending on the paver. It works when:
- The slab is structurally sound, with no heaved sections, wide moving cracks or sunken corners.
- There is room for the height change at the garage door, the front walk and the street apron.
- Water still drains away from the house after the surface comes up.
We set thin pavers on a mortar or polymer bed bonded to the cleaned slab, or on a thin sand bed over a drainage mat, depending on the paver and the slab. Edges get a soldier course glued and pinned so nothing creeps toward the lawn. Where the slab is cracked through or settled, an overlay only telegraphs the problem, and we price a replacement instead.
Concrete, pavers, or both
Concrete driveways. The lowest cost per foot and the fastest to build. In South Florida sun the broom finish lasts, but cracks and oil stains show and patches never match.
Paver driveways. Individual units flex with the ground and lift out for a repair or a pipe underneath. More finish choices than any other surface. Detail on our paver driveway page.
Concrete and paver driveways. A concrete field with a paver border, ribbons or an apron band. A common way to dress up an old drive or blend an extension into the existing slab so the new section looks planned rather than added.
Brick, cobblestone and herringbone. Clay brick reads traditional and holds color. Cobblestone-style concrete pavers give an old-world look at a lower cost than real stone. A herringbone pattern locks the units together against turning tires and is our usual layout where cars pivot in and out of the garage, at a little more labor for the cuts.

How we build a driveway extension
Most owners who want to pave driveway space beside the garage need the same sequence, whatever the surface.
- Survey and layout. Property line, setbacks, utility locate, sprinkler lines and drainage path marked before any digging.
- Saw cut. Clean full-depth cut along the existing slab edge so the joint between old and new is straight.
- Excavation. Sod, soil and roots removed to depth for the base.
- Base. Limerock placed and compacted in lifts with a plate compactor, typically 6 in or more for vehicle areas.
- Surface. Bedding sand and pavers with edge restraint, or forms, wire and a 4 in pour for concrete.
- Joints and finish. Polymeric sand swept in and activated, or control joints cut in concrete, then curing.
- Restore. Sod edge cut clean, sprinklers reset, debris hauled away.
Permits, setbacks and HOA rules
Most South Florida cities require a permit to widen a driveway or replace one, and the city or county usually controls the apron in the right-of-way, the curb cut and the distance from the side property line. Many limit how much of the front yard can be paved. Check with the building department for your address; we confirm the setback and coverage before we price and pull the permit when the job is ours. HOAs commonly review paver color and pattern, apron material and whether an extension is allowed at all, so we put together the drawing and samples for the application. More on our permits and compliance page.
South Florida conditions for driveways
Our soil is mostly sand over limerock and in places coral rock. It drains fast but settles where the base was not compacted, which is why old paver drives sink at the tire tracks. Summer storms put a lot of water on a driveway in a short time, so the slope must carry it to the street or a swale, not toward the garage. Tree roots from ficus and oaks lift both concrete and pavers; we cut and barrier roots at the edge where it is safe to do so. Sun bleaches unsealed concrete pavers over a few seasons, and a sealer slows it.

Driveway extension and pavers over concrete — FAQ
How much does a driveway extension cost? In pavers, $19–$39 per sq ft depending on the paver; in concrete, $12–$20 per sq ft. Small pads sit at the top of the range because the saw cut and setup do not shrink with the footprint.
Can you put pavers over my concrete driveway? Yes, if the slab is sound and there is room for the height change at the garage and the street. Pavers over existing concrete run $17–$32 per sq ft, with leveling of a wavy slab priced separately.
What does concrete driveway replacement cost? $12–$20 per sq ft for tear-out, base and a new 4 in pour. Decorative finishes and borders add to it.
Do I need a permit to widen my driveway? Usually yes, and the city often controls the apron and side setbacks. Check with the building department for your address; we confirm the rules and pull the permit.
Which paver pattern holds up best on a driveway? Herringbone at 45 or 90 degrees, because the units interlock against turning tires. Running bond and basketweave are fine for walks and patios.
