A heated bathroom floor cost in South Florida is typically $2,250–$4,000 added to a new tile floor for a 40–70 sq ft heated area, covering the electric mat or cable system, the thermostat, a dedicated circuit by the electrician and the extra tile labor. It only makes sense when the floor is being retiled anyway, because the heating sits in the thinset under the tile. In Florida it is a comfort upgrade for a few cool months, not a heating system. We install it as part of J. Perry & Sons bathroom renovation projects.

Heated bathroom floor cost

ItemTypical heated areaInstalled range
Electric heating mat or cable, material40–70 sq ft$400–$1,000
Uncoupling membrane with cable channels (optional system)40–70 sq ft$350–$700
Installation of heating system under tile40–70 sq ft$700–$1,250
Dedicated GFCI circuit and programmable thermostat, by electricianper bathroom$650–$1,250
Total added to a new bathroom tile floormaster bath$2,250–$4,000
Bathroom floor tile, standard / large-formatper sq ft$14–$18 / $25–$34
Demo of existing floor tile (retrofit only)per sq ft$4–$6

The heated area is the open floor you walk on, not under the vanity, toilet or tub. A 100 sq ft bathroom usually has 45–60 sq ft of heated floor. Electrical work needs a permit; we pull it with the bathroom permit.

Is a heated floor worth it in South Florida?

For most bathrooms here, the answer depends on who uses it and when.

Where it makes sense:

  • Master bathrooms with large-format porcelain or marble, which feel cold on winter mornings.
  • Homes with older adults, or anyone who feels the cold.
  • Bathrooms on a ground-floor slab with strong air conditioning, where tile stays cool year-round.
  • Owners who are already retiling and want the upgrade while the floor is open.

Where it does not:

  • Guest bathrooms used a few times a year.
  • Condos where adding a circuit is complicated by the building's electrical capacity or rules.
  • As a reason to rip out a good floor. Retrofitting means removing and replacing the tile, which turns a $3,000 upgrade into a $5,000–$9,000 project once the toilet, vanity and baseboard are reset.

In practice, a heated floor in Florida runs from December through February and on air-conditioned mornings the rest of the year. A timer or programmable thermostat keeps it on only before you wake up.

How a heated tile floor is installed

  1. Plan the layout. We draw the heated area around the vanity, toilet, tub and shower curb. Heating cable never goes under fixtures or cabinets.
  2. Electrical rough-in. The electrician runs a dedicated circuit to the thermostat location, with GFCI protection as required for bathroom floor heat. Inspection.
  3. Slab prep. The floor is leveled; any high spot is a pressure point on the cable.
  4. Test the system. The mat or cable is tested for resistance before, during and after installation. A damaged wire under tile is expensive to find.
  5. Install. Either a mat embedded in a thin layer of self-leveler or thinset, or loose cable set into an uncoupling membrane with channels. The floor sensor goes between two runs of cable.
  6. Tile. Tile is set over the heating with a flat trowel technique so the cable is not nicked. Full coverage matters more than ever.
  7. Thermostat and commissioning. After the thinset and grout cure, the electrician connects the thermostat and the floor is turned on in stages.

Running cost and comfort

Electric floor heating systems typically draw around 12 watts per square foot. A 50 sq ft area therefore uses about as much power as a small space heater while running, and a programmed schedule of a few hours on cool mornings keeps the monthly cost low. Heated tile does not heat the room in a meaningful way; it makes the floor surface comfortable, usually in the 80s Fahrenheit.

Florida slabs, moisture and heated floors

Heating cable is sealed and not affected by slab moisture, but the tile assembly above it still needs a sound, flat substrate. We use an uncoupling membrane where the slab has hairline cracks, which also protects the cable. In a shower, floor heating is possible inside a properly waterproofed system with a product rated for wet areas, though few clients here ask for it. In condos we check the association's rules on new circuits and whether the unit's panel has room.

Hurricane season and power outages do not damage a heated floor. The system simply turns back on.

Timeline

Adding floor heat adds about one day to a bathroom floor: the mat goes down and is tested on one day, tile follows. The electrician's rough-in happens with the rest of the bathroom electrical. The whole bathroom schedule is unchanged otherwise.
